Lagavulin 16 Year Old is the benchmark expression from Lagavulin Distillery, established in 1816 on the Isle of Islay and often called the "King of Islay." A slow fermentation of 55 to 75 hours combined with an extended distillation process, roughly 5 hours for the first run and over 9 hours for the second, sets the foundation for this whisky's signature depth. It rests for a full 16 years primarily in refill European oak and ex-bourbon casks, with sherry cask influence rounding out the final character.
Bottled at 43% ABV, the nose brings intense peat smoke reminiscent of Lapsang Souchong tea, layered with iodine, sea salt, dried fruit, sweet spice, and creamy vanilla. The palate is thick and rich, delivering massive peat and oak alongside sherry-driven fruit sweetness, finishing long and spicy with figs, dates, and lingering peat smoke.
