About This Bottle
Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is a rare pure grain whisky produced at the Miyagikyo distillery using continuous Coffey stills, traditional column stills patented by Irishman Aeneas Coffey in the 1830s and imported to Japan by Nikka in 1963. Distilled from a mash bill of 95 percent corn and 5 percent malted barley, this is the same grain whisky component used in Nikka's blended expressions like Nikka From The Barrel, here bottled entirely on its own, an unusual move since grain whisky is typically reserved for blending rather than standalone release.
Specs
- Producer: Nikka Whisky, Miyagikyo Distillery, Japan
- Mash Bill: 95% corn, 5% malted barley
- Distillation: Continuous Coffey still
- ABV: 45%
- Size: 750ml
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Tropical fruits, coconut, banana, and chocolate banana bread sweetness
- Palate: Rich, soft, and sweet, with vanilla wafer, caramel, roasted grain, and dried fruit
- Finish: Delicate, with a touch of honeyed citrus and lingering corn sweetness
With no malt whisky in the blend, Nikka Coffey Grain leans closer to bourbon in character than traditional Scotch or Japanese malt whisky, making it a genuinely distinctive bottle that bourbon lovers and Japanese whisky collectors alike find surprising and rewarding, equally suited to sipping neat or mixing into cocktails.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Nikka Coffey Grain taste like?
Tropical fruit, coconut, and banana on the nose, with vanilla, caramel, and roasted grain on the palate, finishing with honeyed citrus.
Is Nikka Coffey Grain considered Japanese whisky?
Yes, as of 2021 it still qualifies as Japanese Whisky under the Japan Spirits & Liqueur Makers Association's official standards.
How is Coffey Grain different from other Nikka whiskies?
It's a 100% grain whisky (no malt component) distilled in a continuous Coffey still, giving it a bourbon-like character distinct from Nikka's single malt expressions like Yoichi and Miyagikyo.
