About This Bottle

Nikka Yoichi Single Malt comes from Yoichi Distillery, Nikka's first distillery, built in 1934 on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island. Founder Masataka Taketsuru chose the town of Yoichi specifically because its environmental conditions closely mirrored Scotland, where he trained in whisky-making. The distillery still uses traditional direct coal-fired pot still distillation, a method Taketsuru brought back from Scotland that has largely disappeared even there, and sea breeze off Ishikari Bay lends a distinct briny character during maturation across ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.

Specs

  • Distillery: Nikka Yoichi Distillery, Hokkaido, Japan
  • Mash Bill: 100% malted barley, peated
  • Distillation: Traditional direct coal-fired pot stills
  • ABV: 45%
  • Size: 750ml

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Full-bodied with mellow peat, smoke, and salty nuances, developing candied citrus, black licorice, and nutmeg
  • Palate: Firm and powerful, balancing peat, smoke, spice, fresh fruit, and nuts, with mid-palate chocolate
  • Finish: Long and silky, with ripe fruit, herbaceous peat, and a coastal, salty freshness

Bold and strong with refined peaty notes distinct from the lighter Miyagikyo, Yoichi Single Malt captures the authentic, smoky-yet-fruity style the distillery has been known for since 1934, making it a strong choice for fans of coastal, maritime-style Scotch looking to explore Japanese whisky.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Nikka Yoichi Single Malt taste like?
Peat, smoke, and salty coastal notes on the nose, developing citrus, licorice, and chocolate on the palate, finishing long and silky.

Does this have an age statement?
No, it's a non-age-statement (NAS) release blending whiskies of varying ages, permanent since 2016.

How is Yoichi different from Nikka's Miyagikyo single malt?
Yoichi is bolder and more heavily peated with a coastal, briny character from its Hokkaido location, while Miyagikyo is lighter, more floral, and fruit-forward from its inland Sendai distillery.
