About This Bottle

W.L. Weller 12 Year Old is the flagship age-stated release in the W.L. Weller wheated bourbon lineup from Buffalo Trace Distillery, named after William Larue Weller, who introduced the first bourbon to use wheat as a secondary grain instead of rye in 1849. Aged significantly longer than most wheated bourbons, this expression reflects the legacy of the Weller family, whose roots trace back to German immigrants who settled in Maryland in the 1740s before establishing their distilling business in Kentucky.

Specs

  • Distillery: Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, Kentucky
  • Mash Bill: Wheated (wheat as secondary grain instead of rye)
  • Aging: 12 years
  • ABV: 45% (90 Proof)
  • Size: 1L

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Lanolin, almond, creamed corn, and toasty vanilla
  • Palate: Heavily wheated, layered, and moderately sweet, with cocoa dust and soft spices
  • Finish: Long, oaky, and intensely smooth

Earning a 93.5 rating from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible and multiple medals including Double Gold at the North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition, this smooth, balanced, deep bronze bourbon is one of the most sought-after names in the wheated bourbon category, best enjoyed neat to appreciate its full complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does W.L. Weller 12 Year taste like?
Lanolin, almond, and toasty vanilla on the nose, with heavily wheated, moderately sweet cocoa and soft spice on the palate, finishing long and intensely smooth.

Why is W.L. Weller 12 Year so sought-after?
It shares its wheated mash bill and Buffalo Trace origin with the Van Winkle Family Reserve lineup, driving strong demand and scarcity well beyond its retail price.

Who is William Larue Weller?
The Kentucky distiller who introduced the first wheated bourbon in 1849, a recipe that later shaped both the W.L. Weller brand and the Van Winkle lineup, since Pappy Van Winkle himself worked at the original W.L. Weller Co.
